• The PEN Center USA Literary Awards program accepts work produced or published by writers living west of the Mississippi River.

• Entries in seven book categories (fiction, creative nonfiction [includes memoirs], research nonfiction [includes biographies], poetry, young adult, graphic literature, and translation) and four non-book categories (journalism, drama, screenplay, and teleplay) are reviewed and judged by panels of distinguished writers, critics, and editors.

•Winners are announced in late summer. Each winner receives a $1,000 cash prize, a one-year membership to PEN Center USA, and two tickets to the Literary Awards Festival in the fall, where awards are presented to the Literary Awards winners and to honorees. 

• Past winners and honorees include: Joan Didion, Ursula K. Le Guin, Juan Felipe Herrera, Joyce Carol Oates, Sandra Cisneros, Claudia Rankine, Isabel Allende, Bill Konigsberg, G. Willow Wilson, Dan Savage, Jill Leovy, Alice Walker, Ray Bradbury, Walter Mosley, Ben Ehrenreich, Octavia Butler, Gore Vidal, Roxane Gay, T. Christian Miller, Ken Armstrong, Meghan Daum.

• By recognizing the best writing in the western United States, PEN Center USA gives winning writers exposure to a readership that they might not have otherwise reached. 

• You may submit as many entries as you like providing all requirements are met. You must complete an entry form for each submission. You must select ONLY ONE category for each submission.

The PEN Center USA Literary Awards program is accepting submissions of journalism produced or published in 2017 by writers living west of the Mississippi River. Entries are reviewed and judged by panels of distinguished writers, critics, and editors, who select one winner and up to three finalists for each category.

Winners will be announced in the late summer of 2018. Each winner receives a $1,000 cash prize, a one-year membership in PEN Center USA, and two tickets to the Literary Awards Festival in the fall of 2018.

ELIGIBILITY:

Print journalism publications must have been published at least three times during 2017 and must still be active at the end of the year. A publication that is discontinued after completing its publication schedule for 2017 is nonetheless eligible to submit articles to the 2018 Literary Awards.

• Special sections or special issues of print publications that meet the above requirements are eligible only if they were distributed to the full and customary list of subscribers and newsstands.

• Print content must be original and must have been published in 2017.

• Excerpts serialized from fiction and nonfiction books are not eligible. 

• Op-ed pieces are not eligible.

Online journalism publications must have been launched before January 1, 2017, and must be able to show that they are still active in December 2017.

• Online journalism must have been published in 2017. It is assumed that websites will be updated after an entry is submitted, but screenshots of content as it was originally published may be requested by the administrators of the awards.

• Excerpts serialized from fiction and nonfiction books are not eligible. 

• Op-ed pieces are not eligible.

• Blogs are not eligible.

• Forms must be submitted via Submittable by midnight PST on FEBRUARY 15, 2018. Submit one form per entry. Enter credit card payment information.

• SUBMISSION FORM MUST LIST HOME CITY AND STATE OF AUTHOR. IF PUBLISHER'S ADDRESS IS LISTED FOR     AUTHOR, ENTRY WILL BE DEEMED INELIGIBLE.
