The PEN Center USA
Literary Awards program is accepting submissions of work produced or published
in 2017 by writers living west of the Mississippi River. Entries in the book
categories of fiction, creative nonfiction (includes memoirs), research nonfiction (includes biographies), poetry, translation,
and young adult are reviewed and judged by panels of distinguished writers,
critics, and editors, who select one winner and up to three finalists
for each category.
Winners will be announced in the late summer of 2018. Each
winner receives a $1,000 cash prize, a one-year membership to PEN Center USA,
and two tickets to the Literary Awards Festival in the fall of 2018.
BOOKS SUBMITTED TO THE PEN CENTER USA
LITERARY AWARDS MUST:
• Have been first published
between January 1 and December 31, 2017
• Have been professionally
published by a publisher with national distribution
• Have been written by writers and translators whose primary residence when writing the
work was west of the Mississippi River in the United States, including all of
U.S. citizenship not required
- For books written by
multiple authors, the majority of the writers must have
resided primarily west
of the Mississippi River when writing the
• Contain only verifiable forewords, afterwords, bios, quotations,
blurbs, awards citations, and/or any items not written by the author but
included in the submission
• Contain the signed Declaration
of Eligibility form
books including, but not limited to, books published with/by
companies such as America Star, AuthorHouse, Author Solutions, Author’s Choice,
Book Surge, CreateSpace, iUniverse, Lulu.com, Xlibris, etc.
• E-books, anthologies, literary journals, and “Best Of”

WHEN YOU HAVE CONFIRMED YOUR ELIGIBILITY:
• Complete entry form via
Submittable by midnight PST on November 15, 2017.
• Mail four (4) copies of
each title, postmarked by November 30, 2017, and scheduled to arrive no
later than December 15, 2017, to:

not be returned.
• PEN Center USA reserves the right
to make any and all determinations as to a book's eligibility and reserves the
right, at any time, to remove a book from the competition. In any such
determinations, PEN Center USA's decision shall be binding.
